When do I need to exchange my breast implants and where can I schedule a breast implant revision in Baltimore?

The lifespan of breast implants is a very common concern for patients considering breast augmentation. You may be wondering: how long do breast implants last? How often do they need to be replaced? What happens to breast implants over time? And where to go for breast implant revision Baltimore.

Many women mistakenly believe that breast implants have to be replaced every 10 years.  Most silicone and saline implants are FDA approved for 10-20 years, but this does not mean that you have to get them replaced every 10-20 years.

In 2011, the FDA released this report on the safety of silicone breast implants. According to the report, after 10 years of an initial breast augmentation, 1 out of 5 patients need some sort of breast implant revision Baltimore procedure. That means 20% of patients need another operation due to excess scarring inside the breast (capsular contracture), broken implant etc. That also means that 80% of the patient’s breast implants are fine at 10 years! Since 2011, there are newer fifth generation gummy bear implants. These implants appear sturdier than the implants studied in 2011.

If you’re having an issue such as hardening or rippling, or potential rupture, you may need to change out your breast implants. However with proper monitoring (self-exams, mammograms), you don’t need to automatically replace your implants every 10 years.

When a patient undergoes breast augmentation, the initial results are beautifully shaped breasts that appear fuller and youthful. Breast augmentation is an investment in yourself and you should do all you can to minimize the need for revision surgery. Here are some tips to maintain your results!

Wear properly fitted bras

Push-up bras can do more harm than good for your breasts. Studies show that wearing bras with too much lift can weaken the supportive ligaments and muscles. This can potentially speed up the aging process, as your muscles won’t be able to handle the weight of your breasts on their own. Be gentle on your body and wear comfortable, but not overly supportive bras.

Watch your posture

Sitting with poor posture can cause your breasts to pull forward for extended periods of time—potentially causing them to sag. Try to stand and sit up straight and avoid hunching or rounding your shoulders.

Sleep on your back

We spend around a third of our lives sleeping, but snoozing on your side or front can stretch out ligaments in breast tissue. Sleeping on your back provides the ligaments support and reduces the pull of gravity. If you struggle to stay positioned on your back throughout the night, try placing a pillow under each arm to keep your body in place.

Good Skincare

Our skin is our largest organ, but also one of the most delicate parts of the body. Sun exposure can cause damage and stretch out tissue, so don’t sunbathe or tan excessively. Always use a good sunscreen whenever you’re outside, and wear protective clothing when necessary. While it may be tempting to choose a tan over skin safety, know that your body will thank you in the long run.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle

Smoking and drinking can dry out your skin and hair, so cut back on these habits when possible. Also, avoid “yo-yo dieting” as extreme weight changes can break down the elasticity in your skin. Try to keep at a consistent weight via healthy food and proper exercise. Give your body the nutrient-dense fuel it needs to keep your skin and muscles strong.

Exchanging breast implants or additional breast augmentations aren’t always due to deflation or a rupture of the implant (which are rare occurrences), affecting only about 3% of implants. Many revisions are by choice, when women decide they want to change their size or have further refinement. In addition, as you age, your implants may shift, especially if you have had children or gain / lose significant amounts of weight.

Most of Dr. Schreiber’s patients only have to have 1-2 replacements in their lifetime. The length of time you can safely go between replacements will depend on the type of implant you receive and your physiology. Dr. Schreiber will discuss the life of your implants with you before your procedure. Last but not least, you may want to trade your current implants for larger or smaller implants in the future. This is a perfectly valid reason to get your implants replaced!

Do I need a breast augmentation in Baltimore, a breast lift in Baltimore, or both?

No CommentsJuly 19, 2021Jeffrey Schreiber, MD

If you have considered having cosmetic breast surgery, there is a good chance that you have also wondered if you need a breast augmentation, a breast lift or both. There are various factors that will come into play when making this decision.

The most common reasons why women consider a combo breast lift with implants include:

  • Your breasts have lost volume, shape, and firmness due to pregnancy, age, weight loss, or gravity
  • Your breasts are noticeably different in size or shape, and you want more symmetry and fullness
  • Your breasts appear deflated and your nipples and/or areolas are pointing downwards or positioned below the breast crease

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST LIFT TECHNIQUES

A breast lift changes the position of your nipples and areolas, elevates your breasts, and removes any excess skin. The benefit is perkier breasts that look more youthful.

Peri-Areolar Breast Lift – Sometimes referred to as a “donut lift,” the peri-areolar breast lift technique is a great option for women with mild sagging who would benefit from subtle lifting. With this technique, renowned Plastic Surgeon in Baltimore, Dr. Schreiber will make one, circular incision around the entire outer edge of your areola. Again, this technique results in a minimally visible scar.

Anchor Breast Lift – With incisions placed in the shape of an anchor, this lifting technique is reserved for women who require dramatic reshaping to improve significant sagging.

Lollipop Breast Lift– is more suitable for moderately sized breasts. The lollipop lift begins as the anchor lift does. The incision is made around the areola, and then an incision is made down the center of the lower breast.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST IMPLANTS

If you want to achieve a bigger size and more fullness, then combining a breast lift with breast implants is something to look into.

Dr. Schreiber will suggest which implant type based on your body shape, medical history, lifestyle, and beauty goals. The following options are available for breast augmentation in Baltimore:

  • Saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are filled at the time of surgery to allow for a shorter incision and for minor modifications in implant size.
  • Silicone-filled breast implants are filled with soft gel and are available in a variety of shapes. All silicone breast implants are pre-filled and may require a longer incision for implant placement.
  • Cohesive gel silicone implants, also known as “gummy bear” or “form stable” implants, are filled with a cohesive silicone gel which makes them feel thicker and firmer than traditional silicone implants. This enables them to retain their shape and better projection.
  • Shaped implants, also called “teardrop” or “anatomical” implants have less fullness in the upper part and more fullness in the lower part, mimicking the shape of a real breast. They have advantages and disadvantages compared to other implants.

Once you decide which type of breast implant to combine with your breast lift in Baltimore, you should think about the placement of the implant. Dr. Schreiber can place it either: Behind the pectoral muscle or behind the breast tissue and will discuss this with you at your personal consultation.

Advice on Recovering from Breast Augmentation in Maryland

Advice on Recovering from Breast Augmentation in Maryland, breast augmentation Maryland, breast implants Maryland, mommy makeovers MarylandMarch 1, 2018Jeffrey Schreiber, MD

breast implants maryland One of the most common procedures performed at Baltimore Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Center is breast augmentation. Of course, after having breast augmentation in Maryland, our patients are anxious to get out and show off their new look. However, it’s important to take some time to yourself to recover following such a procedure. By following a few key pieces of advice, you’ll be ready to go out and show off your new curves in no time.
After receiving breast implants in Maryland, you will need to relax. This means no heavy lifting for the first several weeks following your procedure. No picking up heavy grocery bags, doing laundry, or picking up the kids. You’ll have to find someone else to help you out with certain chores and daily activities. A light walk is okay, but don’t push yourself too soon, enjoy some time relaxing.
Wearing the right bra is vital. Your surgeon will most likely send you home with a surgical bra that you are meant to wear during the initial recovery stage. Wear the bra for as long as your surgeon recommends, then switch to a sports bra or one without underwire as you continue to recover.
Sleeping on your back is also recommended. Sleeping on your stomach or side during recovery can cause the implants to become misshapen or displaced. The best way to sleep while recovering is on your back, using an extra pillow or two to raise your head. Once the implants have settled into place you can resume sleeping as you normally would.
If you smoke, you should discontinue doing so at least during the first four weeks after surgery. Similarly, you should avoid alcohol. Both substances can interfere with your body’s natural healing abilities and prolong recovery. Both are also bad for your health, and this recovery time could prove to be a great time to quit or reduce such habits.
Of course, you will also need to stay in touch with your surgeon and going to follow-up appointments. This way your doctor can get a good read on how you are recovering and nip any potential complications in the bud. You can also consult with him or her as to when would be a good time to return to normal routines that you have been avoiding while recovering.

When Is It Safe to Work out after Breast Augmentation in Maryland or Other Cosmetic Surgery?

February 1, 2018Jeffrey Schreiber, MD

breast implants maryland
People seeking cosmetic surgery typically want to look their best. As such, many also lead an active lifestyle, working out and being involved in other physically demanding endeavors. Of course, the amount of downtime necessary is not the same for all procedures. Below we offer advice on when it is safe to work out after everything from breast augmentation in Maryland to an abdominoplasty.

Breast Augmentation
After receiving breast implants in Maryland, you will need to be careful with your chest muscles. Typically, within the first month following the procedure it’s safe to workout the lower body and even to mild cardio workouts that don’t involve moving the arms. Stationary bikes are ideal for this type of exercise. After four weeks, check with your doctor to see if you can begin light arm workouts.

Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty needs longer recovery since nearly all workout regimens incorporate the core muscles in some way. It will most likely take at least four weeks before you can begin exercising, and then only light cardio after consulting with your doctor.

Liposuction
Liposuction recovery can take a long time as well, but you can generally begin very light cardio exercises after about three weeks. After five or six weeks mild running and even weights can begin, but only at about half the level of intensity you did prior to surgery.

Facial Rejuvenation and Rhinoplasty
It’s tempting to think that you can begin exercising shortly after facial rejuvenation procedures, however you should typically wait at least a month to begin exercising. Increased blood pressure from exercising could cause your blood vessels to bleed and a hematoma could develop. After a month you should only begin light cardio. Similarly, exercise could lead to nosebleeds following a rhinoplasty and jeopardize your results
Most importantly, discuss your exercise plan with your surgeon before beginning any form of workout following a cosmetic procedure. While the timelines listed above are guidelines, your individual recovery could be different and you will want to be sure to have tailored advice to maintain the results of your procedure.

Plastic Surgeon in Baltimore Explains the Difference between Breast Augmentations and Breast Lifts

September 19, 2017Jeffrey Schreiber, MD

plastic surgeon baltimore

Women coming to a plastic surgeon in Baltimore for breast surgery have the choice to make between breast augmentation and a breast lift. Not only are many women unaware that these are two different procedures, some do not even know that a breast lift is an option. Whether you are looking for breast augmentation, a breast lift, or even a tummy tuck in Baltimore, it is important to know all options that are available to you and to pick the right procedure for your needs.

A breast lift is a popular cosmetic procedure that is primarily done to lift sagging breasts. Some women find that their breasts begin to sag excessively following pregnancy or a drastic weight loss. Breast lifts can fix the sagging and remove excess skin found in the area. The result is perkier, younger looking breasts. A breast lift is mainly suggested for women who are happy with the size of their breasts but want to prevent sagging.

Breast augmentation is another common procedure performed by your plastic surgeon in Baltimore. This procedure is for you if you are mainly looking to increase the size of your breasts. Whereas a breast lift is meant for women who want to correct sagging, breast augmentation primarily serves women who would like bigger, more full breasts. Although breast augmentation can slightly address sagging, that is not its main purpose.

Breast lifts and breast augmentation are both safe procedures that, just like a tummy tuck in Baltimore, MD, will have you looking better and brimming with self confidence. Deciding between a breast lift and breast augmentation really depends on the results you are seeking. If you are looking to address sagging breasts, a breast lift is probably for you. On the other hand, if you would like larger breasts you should look into breast augmentation. If you are still unsure, speaking with your cosmetic surgeon during a consultation is a great way to figure out which procedure is best for your goals and body type.

For more advice on either breast augmentation or breast lifts, or to set up a consultation, do not hesitate to reach out to Jeffrey Schreiber and the Baltimore Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Center.
